Press Release:
POWER TEAM BECOMES LARGEST WIND MARKETER
IN THE EAST
Exelon Power Team, Waymart Wind Farm, LLC
Sign Power Purchase Agreement For 50 MW Pennsylvania Wind Farm
Kennett Square, Pa. May 9, 2001 ? Exelon Power Team and Waymart Wind Farm,
LLC, today announced a 20-year agreement for Power Team to purchase the
output of a 50-megawatt (MW) wind farm located southeast of Scranton,
Pennsylvania, at a rural site on Moosic Mountain, Wayne County. When completed,
the project will be the largest wind energy facility east of the Mississippi
River.
The Moosic Mountain project will include approximately 40 wind turbines,
each rated at 1.3 MW. The turbines will be mounted on 230-foot towers,
and will be capable of producing power at a sustained wind speed of 8
miles per hour. The Moosic Mountain wind farm utilizes the most efficient
wind technology available on the today's market.
Earlier this year, Power Team signed 20-year power purchase agreements
to purchase 9 megawatts of output from Somerset Wind Farm outside Pittsburgh,
Pa., and 15 megawatts of output from Mill Run Wind Farm in Fayette, Pa.
The Moosic Mountain agreement brings Power Team's wind portfolio to 74
megawatts, making it the largest wind marketer east of the Mississippi
River.
"We are extremely pleased to participate in this wind project. We
believe consumers want the ability to purchase renewable energy, especially
windenergy," said Mike Freeman, a long-term transactor for Exelon
Power Team. Waymart is affiliated with National Wind Power of the United
Kingdom, and its United States partner, Orion Energy, LLC, of Oakland,
California.
Reid Buckley of Orion, said, "We are excited to be working with Power
Team on the largest wind energy project in Pennsylvania." David Butterworth,
of NWP, added "the Waymart Wind Farm, our second project in Pennsylvania
since 2000, evidences the commitment of the region's electricity customers
to add clean, renewable power to their energy mix." NWP developed
a 10 MW wind project last year in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
The construction of the Moosic Mountain wind farm will bolster the amount
of energy that can be marketed to commercial and residential customers
across the state of Pennsylvania. Community Energy Inc., a renewable energy
marketing company based in Wayne, Pa., and Power Team are jointly marketing
the output of the wind project. Earlier this year Community Energy signed
an agreement with PECO Energy to market the wind energy to residential
and commercial customers in the PECO service territory. The wind energy
will be offered in a flexible manner to where consumers can choose the
amount of wind energy they wish to purchase.
Power Team's current renewable supply portfolio includes wind, landfill
gas, hydroelectric, and biomass generation. "A diverse generation
portfolio is one of the most important factors in
having the ability to operate a successful power marketing business,"
said Ken Cornew, vice president, Exelon Power Team. "A clean and
reliable generation portfolio allows Power Team to be an attractive solution
to our customers' energy needs."
The Waymart Wind Farm will be the fourth wind project constructed in
Pennsylvania. The estimated annual energy output is roughly equivalent
to the yearly energy consumption of about 20,000 homes of average size.
Exelon Power Team, the power marketing division of Exelon Generation Co.,
LLC, is one of the nation's largest and most reliable energy suppliers
with access to more than 37,000 megawatts of generation. Power Team's
aggressive approach to short-term markets, and its willingness to purchase
power and transmission rights, has led to completed power agreements across
the continental U.S. and Canada. Power Team will continue to pursue renewable
energy projects in many regions of the country, according to Freeman.
National Wind Power (NWP) is the United Kingdom's largest developer, owner
and operator of wind farms. NWP is currently working on a 150-megawatt
facility in Pecos County in West Texas.
