Press Release:

GREEN LIGHT FOR RHYL FLATS OFFSHORE WIND FARM

A clean green future will soon be on the horizon following the granting of consent for the Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm and associated onshore electricity connections from the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. This follows Consents and Licences obtained from the National Assembly for Wales, the Department for Transport and Conwy County Borough Council, for other aspects of the development.

This project has been developed by Celtic Offshore Wind Limited (COWL) which is a business consortium formed between the Renewable Development Company (RDC) of Mold and First Hydro Renewables Limited (FHR). RDC was responsible for developing the project and obtaining the necessary consents. It was originally intended that FHR would be the long term owners and operator of the project. However, due to current restructuring of FHR's parent Company, Edison Mission Energy, RDC and FHR have now partnered with National Wind Power Ltd. to take the project forward. National Wind Power Limited is also in the process of developing the neighbouring North Hoyle Offshore Wind Farm.

Michael Haas, Director of RDC, one of the driving forces behind the project stated "We are delighted that the local community, the North Wales Council's and the Welsh Assembly Government have given such positive support to the scheme. RDC will be working closely with NWP to help ensure the successful implementation of this flagship project."

He added "the Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm is expected to play a major role in providing clean sustainable energy and in helping Wales to deliver its share of providing at least 10% of the UK's electricity need from renewable energy by 2010. RDC has gained valuable experience of the fledgling offshore wind industry and the company will continue to work to provide renewable energy for Wales and to maximise the benefits for the Welsh Economy."
