Orion Energy establishes long-term relationships with landowners to build wind power projects that add value to the land and the environment. We hope to answer some initial questions here, and encourage you to contact us with further questions and comments.

Where are wind projects currently being developed?

Wind power projects are found throughout the United States, Canada, and around the world. Projects have been installed in over half the 50 states, and many more projects are currently in development. The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) website lists existing and proposed projects in the US at www.awea.org/projects/index.html.

Is my property a potential wind power site?
There are many important factors to consider in determining the viability of a potential wind project. These include high quality wind “resource” (i.e. the wind’s strength, consistency, etc.), access and proximity to utility transmission lines with available capacity, construction viability, and many others. For a comprehensive outline of the steps required to develop land into a wind project, please see Our Expertise. If you feel your property may have the potential for a wind project, please contact us.

Can my land be used for other purposes along with a wind project?
Wind projects coexist with a variety of uses. Worldwide, wind projects share land with cattle, sheep, wildlife, crops, hunting and recreation, and oil and gas wells, to name a few examples.

How does a piece of land become a wind power project?

This process is described in Our Expertise.

How much land is taken up by a wind project?
Typically, less than 5% of total land area is used by a wind project’s equipment and support structures, including the wind turbines, electrical lines, electrical substation, maintenance roads, and related infrastructure.

How does wind power work?
Please visit the websites of the American Wind Energy Association, www.awea.org/pubs/factsheets.html, and the Danish Wind Industry Association, www.windpower.org/tour/index.htm, for their excellent descriptions of how wind turbines generate electricity.
